Yes the ending should have been… the Hardware Guy appears (while the assembled group tug violently on the bag), holds them at gunpoint, gently takes the sack, while saying, “Yuh know, the second key was only 50% more.” He then makes his escape. Rat Race is one of those movies that will COST you.
Saying here, I had to buy the DVD, I’ve had to spend huge amounts of time watching it over and over. I had to spend even more money and time buying and listening to the soundtrack. Rat Race is unquestionably good. I mean could 3 dozen Lucys be wrong? (Still, the film’s ending could have benefited from a re-write. (The “stupid hardware guy” should have prevailed, while saying, “You know, the second key was only 50-percent more.”)

I watched this a million times when it came out. Even years later it’s one of the more quotable movies I’ve watched.
